1) Your final exam: I have added SIX POINTS on the final exam. The reason for this is that 3 questions were worded poorly and I added 3 points as extra credit for attendance. Please contact me about this category only if
• you want to see your scantron and check the scores
• I have forgotten to add the 6 points for you.

2) Other scores: I have been very liberal in grading. I will not entertain any request for upgrading the score because “you just feel it is very low.” If you want to see me about grade changes in this area,
• Please be very sure of your request. I have already been very lenient in assigning points.
• I will be in my office during the following hours, if you would like to talk to me about your grades.
Tomorrow: Thursday, December 14, 11.30-1pm.

3) If the questions are about your group performance (DHIN project or Presentation), please meet me as a team. I do not think it will be a very efficient use of our time if I spend the time with each team member individually.

4) Please do not ask for extra points because one or more of your team members did not step up to the plate and do his/her work. You worked on the DHIN project and group presentation as a team and you are equally responsible for the final product.

5) All grades have been rounded off to the nearest whole number. Please do not contact me with requests for 0.5 points or 0.25 points to push your letter grade to the next level. I will not entertain such requests.

WMP Project Winners!

The client and I have chosen the winners. the winners will be presenting to the DHIN Advisory Council. The presentation date is scheduled for December 7th. The meeting for the Consumer Advisory Committee is scheduled from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. The location is DELAWARE TECHINICAL AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE - STANTON CAMPUS, 400 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, Delaware 19713. Directions are included at the end of this posting. The first part of the morning will include a presentation from Medicity, Inc - the Utility implementation vendor. You might be interested to see how this system will look and work. Their presentations will follow, and lunch will be included.

The client would like the groups to keep their presentations to a maximum of 8 - 10 minutes per group. The group will take questions from the Committee members briefly at the end of each presentation. The group is required to provide a general overview of their website mock ups and describe what they think are the most important sections or points that make their project unique and appealing the DHIN Utility users/consumers.

3 on 3 Charity Basketball Event

The MIS Honor Society is holding a 3 on 3 basketball event to help raise money for school shoes for needy children in the Newark/Christiana area. They are working with the Newark Area Welfare Committee – a 100% volunteer organization that helps people throughout Newark (http://www.newarkareawelfare.org/). They serve the community with an Emergency Assistance Program, Food Cupboard, Christmas Baskets, and Shoes for Needy Children. In 2005 over 2600 individuals in the Newark area received assistance in one form or another.

Tommorrow and Tuesday will be your last chance to sign up for the RoundBall Ruckus 3-on-3 charity basketball event. This is a great opportunity to give back to the less fortunate via the Newark Welfare Society's "Shoes for School" program. The event will be held this Saturday, December 2 at noon. We will have divisions for men and women. (competitive and non-competitive divisions). The entrance fee is $30 a team and each team member will get a free t-shirt.

Roundball Ruckus 3-on-3 Rules

We will play a single elimination tournament. One loss and your team is out.

Game is straight to 12 points, or a 30 minute time limit. Game may not end in a tie.
On any change of possession the ball must be taken back by the new offensive team. The ball must be taken back behind the 3pt line.Play by 1 point and 2 point baskets. (Behind the 3pt line, basket is 2 points.) Play “make it take it.” After a made basket, the scoring team will retain possession, and get the ball up top.There won’t be referees calling the fouls. If you get fouled, call it yourself and it will be your team’s ball up top. Baskets count if you are fouled in the process of shooting.
When a team gets the ball up top, they may not dribble or shoot the ball. They must check the ball to the defense, and then put the ball in play by a pass. The half court line is out of bounds. Before the game, the teams can decide which lines are out of bounds on the sides, since some of the courts don’t allow too much room for a baseline 3-point shot. The teams must agree on the out of bounds

Arthur Ashe, General Manager of Wal-Mart Logistics, and responsible for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Smyrna, Delaware will be presenting at UD on Monday, November 13, 5:30-6:30 in Smith 120.

Mr. Ashe will give a brief Wal-Mart overview/update, discuss the Wal-Mart distribution channel including development of product RFID (radio frequency identification) and answer questions for students and faculty.

All faculty and students are invited to attend. This qualifies for the MIS Hi-Tech Seminar Series.

The Internet, Technological Change, and the Law”

Philip J. Weiser is Professor of Law at the University of Colorado, where he has a joint appointment with the School of Law and the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program. This year, he is Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Professor Weiser is a 1990 graduate of Swarthmore College and has a J.D. from New York University Law School. He served as a law clerk for Judge David M. Ebel of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and for United States Supreme Court Justices Byron R. White and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Professor Weiser entered the world of technology policy as Senior Counsel to Joel Klein, Assistant Attorney General, Antitrust Division, at the U.S. Department of Justice. Since joining the University of Colorado, Weiser founded and serves as Executive Director of the Silicon Flatirons Telecommunications Program, which holds regular seminars on issues at the intersection of information technology, business, and law. Professor Weiser teaches, lectures, and writes widely on information law and policy topics, including a recent book, Digital Crossroads: American Telecommunications Policy in the Internet Age (co-authored with Jon Nuechterlein, MIT Press, 2005).

Problem with Article Links

Some students have been using articles from UD library databases. The links to these articles on their blogs/chapter presentations have not been working (particularly if they used Lexis Nexis or other similar databases). The problem with these databases is that the links to these articles are not persistent. They keep changing. As a result of this, when someone clicks on the article link, the article is no longer available.

I chatted with the library folks (via AskRef!, of course) and they told me that there are not aware of any solution to this problem. They provided me with a list of databases that have persistent (non-changing) links. This list is available at http://www2.lib.udel.edu/usered/purls/list.htm. This page also provides instructions on how to link articles from these databases.

In future, in case you want to use library databases for your articles, I recommend that you use databases on this list so that you can provide a WORKING link to your article (either on your blog or your chapter presentations).

The Grand Thornton Presentation

Grant Thornton presentation by Adam Ross tomorrow. Adam is a UD Finance and MIS minor graduate. Adam is back by popular demand with his entertaining presentation on tips for landing the internship or job. The students really enjoyed his presentation last year. Grant Thornton recruits all business majors into their Business Advisory practice and they also recruit accounting students for their audit/tax practices. They offer internship opportunities as well. Adam will also talk about the opportunities offered by GT. Adam said he will arrive early and stay afterwards to talk with students.

Your introductory post is due tomorrow (Friday) at 11.59 p.m. I will deduct points if you miss this deadline. the deadlines for the 2nd-6th posting can be found in the tentative class schedule included in your class syllabus.

a) your posting should be 250-300 words long. This is the word requirement for all 6 postings. You may exceed this word limit but never go below 250 words.
b) start your posting by linking (hyperlink) to the article that you are going to be discussing.
c) Since this is the introductory post, use a few sentences to introduce yourself and then start wirting about the article.

click on the comment that you just posted. Copy that URL.
Create a section for COMMENT LINKS on your blog and add that URL to that list.
Here is an example of a blog that contains comments as a list (arranged by blogs subscribed to by the blogger).

How do I create a section for "Comments" on my blog?

Go to blogger.com and access the template for your blog.
You copy the any of the links section of the class blog (for example, chapter slides) and paste that section in your template, just before your previous posts section.
Then edit the "chapter slides" title to say "Comments List".
You will then edit the link that says "chapter 1" to say "comment 1".
In the space for the URL for chapter 1, you will cut and paste the URL for your comment from your friend's blog.

You are required to create a 'blog' around an approved topic in the area of internet marketing. (Hint: Look at your book chapters and find a topic that you are interested in. Some examples of approved topics: a) legal, ethical, and privacy issues, b) International Internet marketing, c) Marketing research on the web, d) Role of product in the Internet marketing mix. etc.) Note: Choose a theme that you are interested in as a marketing student!) You will need to set up and maintain an account at two different websites: you will use http://www.blogger.com/ to create your blog and http://www.bloglines.com/ to maintain your website and to subscribe to other blogs. Both these accounts are FREE!

Project Scope
The blog project consists of 3 components: Maintaining your own blog, commenting on 3 other blogs, and maintaining your bloglines account.
1. Maintaining your own blog
You will be making one post to your blog every 7 days.
Content of your posting: In each of your postings, you will discuss a news article related to your blog topic. These articles can be from any top-tier magazines or from postings from other marketing related blogs in the blogosphere.
Each posting should start with a hyperlink to the article/posting that you plan to discuss in that posting.
Your blog must contain at least one new entry every 7 days (although you are not limited to only one entry, of course). Each post should be 250-300 words.
From Sep. 8, 2006, you will be expected to post once every 7 days till Oct. 13, 2006. You will be expected to have 6 postings (one every 7 days) on your blog before your blog is due on Oct. 20, 2006.

Where to start?
Set up your blog and your bloglines subscriptions (Fri, Sep. 1, 2006)
Create an introductory post. This post should contain 2 paragraphs – the first paragraph should introduce you, explain the purpose of the blog, state that the blog is a part of course project and tell the readers about your particular theme for the blog. The second paragraph should discuss an article related to your blog topic, provide a hyperlink to the article and include hyperlinks in the posting. (Fri, Sep. 8, 2006). For deadlines for your 3rd-6th postings, see tentative class schedule on page 9.
Your blog should also link to each of your team member’s blogs, blogs that you are commenting on and other related resources which you choose to link to.

2. Commenting on other blogs.
As a part of the blog project, you will be posting comments on your classmates blogs.
You are required to have commented on 15 of your classmates’ postings.
You cannot comment on 15 postings at random. You will choose 3 of your classmates’ blogs to comment on their postings and you will stick to those 3 blogs for the rest of the project.
You are required to 'comment' 5 times till the end of the blog project on each of the 3 blogs that you choose (total: 15 comments). Each comment should be 100-150 words.
Comments are to be thoughtful responses to the entries posted by the blogger.
It is up to the discretion of the blogger to respond to comments posted on his/her blog. There are no points assigned for commenting on comments.
On your blog, provide a list of the links to each of your individual comments.
You are allowed to comment on one blog outside of blogs created by your classmates. These outside comments can be used as part of the 15 comment requirement.

3. Maintaining your bloglines account.
Bloglines Subscriptions: You need to subscribe to:
At least 9 blogs
The class blog
3 other blogs created by your classmates
5 other resources and/or theme-related blogs (esp. those listed on your blog)
You need to make your subscriptions public and make sure that a link to your bloglines account is available on your blog.

Blog Grading
The blog is worth 20% of your total grade. The blog project is due for evaluation on Friday, Oct.20, 2006 by 5pm.
Since this is the first time most of you will be working with blogs (websites), I will be available to provide you with feedback on a one-to-one basis. You may not publish information on the World Wide Web that is prohibited by law or disallowed by licenses, contracts, copyrights or University regulations. How do I create the blog?
You are required to use http://www.blogger.com/ as your blog platform as it is free, easy and hosted. The following are the steps that you will follow on the website to create your blog.
Sign up for an account on http://www.blogger.com
Create the URL and name for your blog (you can change the name later, the URL is permanent)
Select the template (you are free to choose any template that you want)
Start posting (i.e. it really is that simple to create the blog).

You are also required to set up an account on Bloglines in order to manage the blogs and news subscriptions. The account needs to be made ‘public’. Once you make it public, email me the URL. The details on how to manage the bloglines account and make it public are given below.

What do I do on Bloglines?
Set up an account on Bloglines.
click on the 'my feeds' tab.
click on 'Add'
key in the URL of the blog to which you are subscribing, click subscribe
click ... again, you are now subscribed

You are required to subscribe to the class blog and to 3 other blogs created by your classmates (via a news aggregator: bloglines). Thus each blog needs an RSS feed. Blogs created on http://www.blogger.com/ automatically have such a feed. The URL of the feed will be in the format:
http://yourname.blogspot.com/atom.xml (for example, this class' feed is http://buad477fall06.blogspot.com/atom.xml

How do I make my Bloglines account public?
To make your subscriptions public (required for this project and allows me, and others, to see your subscriptions. I need to see it in order to evaluate your project):
click the 'share' tab
click the hyperlinked 'profile' (second sentence)
click 'blog settings' (horizontal nav.)
key in a username
click 'yes' for show my blog
save changes
your url for your public subscriptions will be:http://www.bloglines.com/public/username
Provide a link to this URL on your blog.
